Yowamca is used by children, so we keep what we collect small and we protect it. This page explains what we collect, why, who sees it, and the choices you have. We follow the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
1. What we collect
- Account details: your name, email, password (stored scrambled, never readable), role, and for students their class.
- Learning activity: lessons you open, quiz and exam scores, streaks, game and competition results, chess games.
- Things you post: community posts and photos, discussion room messages, lesson messages with your tutor.
- Tutor and school applications: headline, subjects, rates, bank account for payouts, and identity or certificate documents. Only admins can open these documents.
- Payments: what was paid, when, for which lesson, the Paystack reference and your wallet history. We do not see or store your card number.
- Technical data: your device and browser type, IP address and login times, used to keep the service secure. Our security log records important actions such as sign-ins and admin changes.
- Video lessons and live classes use your camera and microphone only while you are in the room. We do not record them. Connections pass through a relay service (Metered) when a direct link is not possible.
2. Why we use it
- to run your account, lessons, exams, games and bookings;
- to take payments, hold them in escrow, pay tutors and handle refunds, and to keep financial records that we are required to keep;
- to keep students safe: moderating posts, checking tutors, preventing fraud and cheating;
- to send you notices about your account, lessons and payments by email, in the app and, if you allow it, as push notifications;
- to improve the service.
We do not sell your personal data and we do not show advertising.
3. Children
Many of our students are under 18. Parents and guardians can link to their child's account to see progress and pay for lessons. Students' profiles are not public, and other users see only a first name and the information needed for learning features. We ask parents to guide younger children and to contact us to see, correct or remove their child's data.
4. Who we share it with
- Tutors you book see your name, class, subject, lesson time and the messages you send them. For home lessons they receive the address you give.
- Service providers that help us run Yowamca: Paystack (payments), our hosting provider, an email provider, Cloudflare (photo storage), Metered (video relay) and Google (sign-in and AI features). They only receive what they need.
- Authorities, when the law requires it or to protect a child from harm.
- Nobody else. Your exam results, wallet and messages are never shown publicly.
5. How long we keep it
We keep your account while it is open. If you close your account, we remove or anonymise your personal details. We keep payment and refund records for as long as Nigerian tax and accounting rules require, and security records for a limited period.
6. Keeping it safe
Passwords are stored in scrambled form, connections are encrypted, private documents are available only to the people involved and admins, and admin access is limited by role. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong password and never share it.
7. Your rights
You can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, close your account (My account page), object to some uses, or complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. Write to us and we will answer within a reasonable time.
8. Cookies
We use a login cookie so you stay signed in, and simple settings stored in your browser. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
9. Changes and contact
If we change this policy in an important way we will tell you in the app or by email. Questions or requests: use our Contact page. See also our Terms and Conditions.
